Scientists from Russia has created a cure for muscular weakness

Biologists from Kazan has developed a new drug that can inhibit myasthenia, muscle weakness, and it does not have strong side effects, the press service of the Russian science Foundation.

According to who statistics, approximately 1.5 million people on Earth suffer from myasthenia an autoimmune disease in which the immune system begins to attack the nerve endings that control the functioning of muscles. As a result, man begins gradually to lose control of separate muscle groups, which often leads to death due to respiratory arrest.

As said Konstantin Petrov, a chemist from the Institute of organic and physical chemistry RAS, Kazan, in recent years, scientists have developed dozens of drugs to help patients with muscular weakness to survive and not feel tired all the time. Most of these drugs block the enzyme AChE, decomposing acetylcholine, the «signal action» that nerve cells use to control the operation of muscle cells.

Such therapy, according to scientists, allows to eliminate most of the unpleasant symptoms of myasthenia, but it has a number of unpleasant side effects associated with disturbances in the bladder and intestines. This significantly degrades the quality of life of patients.

Kazan chemists and biologists found an alternative way of dealing with muscle weakness and developed a new molecule, C-547, which can block the action of this enzyme and thus has a less pronounced side effects, like its «competitors».

Unlike other drugs of myasthenia, this substance, as shown by the experiments of scientists, only interacts with AChE, and does not interfere with other enzymes that control the processes in the organs of digestion and urination.

The scientists tested the drug on rats and tissue samples human bladder. As it turned out, a small dose of C-547, is necessary to combat muscle weakness, do not cause any changes in the bladder muscles.

On the other hand, his «normal» competitor, pyridostigmine bromide significantly increased tone and contractility of the walls of the body. In addition, the Kazan chemists have shown that the effect of taking C-547 is stored for a long time – more than 72 hours. Due to these properties, inhibitor C-547 will be one of the most promising drugs to fight the symptoms of myasthenia gravis, conclude the authors.
